Mathematical secrets of Beauty

Beauty fascinates all. This is the truth. Poet defines it poetically, writers define it literally and different people defines it differently. So, mathematics defines it mathematically. This post may not make you all satisfied but will make you all excited to explore its hidden truth. I am writing this post based on Prof S Sundararaj's article.

Angelina Jolie

Try this out....

Early Greek  Mathematician found that the rectangle with its length 1.6 times the breath looks most attractive to the human. This is called golden proportion. So, you all can try this out with the group of friends or with the students. It will be more interesting when you are in large group. Ask them to draw a free-hand rectangle which they consider is most attractive to their eyes. After they finished, ask them to measure the length and breath, and divide the length by the breath. It will surprise you when most of their answer comes 1.6 or closer to it. Prof s Sundararaj tried this experiment with 60 students and was surprised when average came 1.6. 1.6 is called golden ratio. Taj Mahal has this proportion.

So, coming to the beauty in human face, one with golden proportion is considered beautiful or good looking. Face of many movie stars has this golden proportions, like Leonardo Di Caprio, Angelina Jolie and Emma Watson has this measurement. Golden ratio is not only found in face but whole over the body. Check this out:
1. Ratio of distance from navel to knee and knee to feet is 1.6.
2. Length of the ankle to tip of middle finger is 1.6 times the length of the arm.
3. Distance from the shoulder to top of head is 1.6 times the length of the head.
4.Width of the mouth is 1.6 times the width of the nose at nostrils
5. Height of the person is 1.6 times the distance from the navel to the feet.
6.The distance from the head top to chin is 1.6 times the width of the face.

Most of the flowers' petals exhibit this golden proportions. Try looking out in the garden. But please don't pluck it off just to measure it. Let it bloom there, hehe!! After reading this post, I would like to request you all not to try this with your girlfriend and boyfriend because they may find it weird measuring them unless both have mutual understanding. Till then, have fun with this and find it out whether it works with you all too.

  1. Very exciting description of Beauty, feel like trying it out right away; even if people don't find me beautiful if I am mathematically attractive then as a maths teacher I should be happy.
However, golden proportion may not apply to human, there are shapes and colors to consider besides length. Smile makes a person look so attractive and the fourth dimension- warmheartedness alone is enough to make a person look so attractive.
It is far important to be humanly beautiful than be mathematically or physically beautiful.

  2. Thank u so much sir. Yeah it is true that inner beauty is much more beautiful than physical beauty. Physical is just it can be seen but inner beauty can be felt so strongly. I do go with inner beauty than external is very beautiful with inner beauty....
